LLNE Fall Meeting

We are fortunate to be able to hold the meeting at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, in the Berkshires. "The Clark's mission and its geographical location define three essential, interrelated aspects of its character and identity: the quality of its art, the beauty of its pastoral setting and the depth of its commitment to the generation of ideas." With this program, we hope to contribute to the generation of ideas.

We are also fortunate in having terrific speakers for the program. Ralph Lerner and Judith Bresler are among the most knowledgeable people in the field of art law. Their book, Art Law: the Guide for Collectors, Investors, Dealers and Artists, is a standard reference for the art community. Filippa Anzalone, one of our own, is an enthusiastic lecturer on the subject of art law. Anthony Amore, as Security Director of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, is leading the search for the Gardner's stolen art. He lectures widely on art crime, and has just come out with a very interesting new book on the subject. For more information about our speakers, see our Speakers Biographies. The Bibliography, culled from the work of our speakers, will give you a taste of what is to come.

Part of your registration fee includes an all-day pass to view the galleries. Time is set aside for this in the Schedule.

Directions and Accommodations in and around Williamstown are available. If you are interested in sharing a ride, we will have a wiki created for that purpose. For area restaurants and an extensive list of things to do, see our Area Attractions page. Bring the family or friends, and enjoy the fall foliage season in the Berkshires.

Our Social Responsibility project will benefit the Clark's Education Department's special Family Days. We are asking for specific art supplies or a donation in support of programs which take place three times a year as celebrations of special exhibitions or the permanent collection. The Clark also runs the Responding to Art Involves Self Expression (RAISE) program in collaboration with the Berkshire County Juvenile Court (BCJC).

She has a list of great sights, experiences, and food in the City of Brotherly Love for our AALL meeting. She has also designed a Google maps link for us to find those great places. We are also introducing a new column from the public law library perspective. The Head of the Trial Court Libraries of Massachusetts, Marnie Warner, has written great piece on law libraries and access to justice. Come and chat with other information professionals in this open forum! Law and Technology Camp 5/16 at HLS

The Inaugural LATCamp

Interested in using technology to ease the pain of creating end-of-semester outlines? Want to share library resources with law students and professors in a completely new way? Looking for a way to finally illustrate a case in class through the use of technology? Or are you just plain curious about the intersection of legal information and technology? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should come to LATCamp!

LATCamp (Law and Technology Camp) is a one-day unconference hosted by the Harvard Law School on May 16. We welcome everyone who is involved with legal education throughout New England – students, professors, librarians, technologists. It promises to be an exciting day of lively discussions, brainstorming, and forming new ideas. See the About page for more information.

Applying to LATCamp couldn’t be easier! Just fill out the registration form with a little bit of information about yourself and why you want to come to LATCamp. Applications are due by April 18, 2011, and all participants will be notified by April 25 of their acceptance. Due to space constraints, we will be capping attendance at 75.

Once you’re accepted, you are encouraged to submit session proposals and to comment on others. Lively discussions before the day begins help to shape the discussion topics and to set the participatory tone for the day. You can also sign up for a Dork Short! Dork Shorts are 2-minute mini-presentations on projects you may be working on. They are presented before the whole group, and you can show off a web-based project, or just get up and talk, prop-free.

What? Wait a minute! It’s October 1? How can that be? I was just sworn in as LLNE President in….JULY? No! That can’t be right. Can it?
I can’t believe it is October already and I am sure many of you are feeling this very same way. I wanted to take some time out of the craziness that is September to fill you all in on what is happening with LLNE.

Snow in October

Amanda Merck, Chair of the LLNE Service Committee has organized a great event, where volunteers from LLNE will participate in Jumpstart's "Read for the Record" campaign. This year they will be reading "The Snowy Day" to children at The Open Center in Somerville, MA on the morning of Thursday, October 7th. Please note: They were originally scheduled to read in the afternoon, but it has been changed to 10:00 am ‑ 11:30 am! They will be joined by Senator Pat Jehlen and Suzan Bocamazo, the new editor of the Mass Lawyers Weekly! Last year the MLW showcased photos of our event in their newspaper.

In its fifth year, Jumpstart's "Read for the Record" campaign will bring together hundreds of thousands of people to break the world record for the number of children read to in a single day with a single book, TheSnowy Day. Completing the National Inventory

Those of you at the annual meeting in Denver in July heard me speak about the importance of AALL’s current project to complete a national inventory of primary legal materials. It is AALL’s policy that the public have no-fee permanent public access to authentic online legal information on government websites, including the text of all primary legal materials. The state work groups are currently in the process of compiling the primary legal resources of every level of government for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. As you can imagine, this is a huge task and many of LLNE’s members are participating in this project. Below are the state working groups for the states that make up LLNE. If you would like to take part in this project please do not hesitate to contact anyone on this list. I am sure they would gladly take your help. It is my hope that by July 2011, when we are meeting at the AALL Annual Meeting in Pennsylvania, that each state in LLNE will have completed its inventory.

The Fall LLNE Meeting

The fall LLNE meeting will be held at Northeastern University School of Law Library in Boston. At this meeting we will be learning how to improve workplace health and worker’s morale. Libraries are being faced with demands for doing more with less and in some cases libraries are being closed or being threatened with closure. Information is coming in from all angles and monumental change happens as we sip our morning coffee. How can you be more efficient and more effective? How can you keep your spirits up as well as your colleagues and customers? Come to the Fall LLNE Meeting and find out!

Jay Hargis, Director of Learning & Development at Tufts Medical Center will give the keynote address on “Catching the Morale Virus” and how to keep an upbeat attitude at work and then spread it around. Hamish Blackman, CEO of Wellness Corporation will talk about individual stressors and examines techniques for managing events, behavior, and attitude. Jason Eiseman, Librarian for Emerging Technologies at Yale Law School will do a presentation on dealing with information overload. Stephen Donweber, Senior Legal Information and Educational Technology Librarian at Pappas Law Library will be our facilitator for our joint brainstorming session on how we can apply these ideas and concepts to our own situations.
I hope to see many of you there on November 19. With the holidays fast approaching by this time, maybe Mr. Blackman will also talk to us about holiday stressors and how to manage those!

EDGAR J. BELLEFONTAINE, ESQ., REMEMBERED

The Trustees and staff of the Social Law Library are greatly saddened by the death of Edgar J. Bellefontaine. As Librarian from 1961 to 1998 Mr. Bellefontaine was the guiding force behind the Library’s many improvements and innovations. He kept the Library’s primary focus squarely on the patrons who depend on its resources and services. He guided the Library’s adoption of new technologies, forged a commitment to historic preservation, and encouraged nearly four decades of energetic development. He never forgot that the Library was founded as a “social” organization to foster a sense of professionalism and community among the members of the bench and bar. He was brilliant, enterprising, engaging and forever innovative. Made up of equal parts Maine and Metropolitan Boston, he was a much loved and gifted custodian of the law.

Edgar Bellefontaine’s dedication to new and improving technologies, combined with his respect and thoughtful preservation of the past, created a unique period in the Library’s two hundred year history—an information renaissance—and made the Social Law Library a leader among the nation’s law libraries. The Library “firsts” realized during his tenure present a chronology of Social Law Library automation and advancement: The installation of a coin operated copier (1963) and microfilm reader (1972); construction of a micro-fiche production laboratory (1974); production of microfiche editions of the Supreme Judicial Court and Appeals Court Records & Briefs (1975); the Colonial Court Records Program, the nation’s first-ever program for the restoration, preservation and indexing of colonial court records (1975); installation of West Publishing Company’s computerized legal research system WESTLAW (1976); creation of the Copy Center (1984); first endowed book fund established (1984); LEXIS/NEXIS membership group program debuts, one of the first library-based LEXIS subscription services in the country (1986); first organization in the nation to publish state agency information on CD-ROM with publication of Mass. Administrative Law Library (1989), followed by publication of Mass. Substantive Law Library (1992); automation of the Social Law Library catalog with installation of the VTLS Library System (1993); introduction of the Social Law Library Website, www.socialaw.com (1995); and creation of the TechCenter, providing public computer terminals for online research (1995). As a service to solo and small firm patrons challenged by the high cost of “going digital,” SLL in 1996 became an Internet Service Provider (ISP), and offered email services as well as Web-page design and hosting services (1996). Throughout these years and since, visiting judges, educators, practitioners and librarians have come from throughout the world to learn about the American system of law and the use of technology in legal research.

A graduate of the University of Maine and the Boston College Law School, Mr. Bellefontaine was an extraordinary citizen of the scholarly, legal and law library communities. His published scholarship was on the subject of court rules and on early Massachusetts legal history. His publications include “Post-conviction Remedies under the Rules of Criminal Procedure” (1981); “The Early History of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court” (1990); “Chief Justice Francis Dana: Patriot and Federalist” (1992); “Waitstill Winthrop” (1995); “Honorable Isaac Addington: Fervent Public Servant and Reluctant Chief Justice” (1996); and “Samuel Sewall: The Last Puritan Justice” (1998). He served twenty-two years as a member of the Massachusetts Judicial Records Committee, and was founding Director of the Supreme Judicial Court Historical Society.

In the mid-70’s he served as Reporter for the Massachusetts Judicial Conference Criminal Rules Project and as a Reporter for the Federal Speedy Trial Planning Group for the District of Massachusetts and the District of Rhode Island.

He is a former President of the New England Law Library Consortium and the American Association of Law Libraries’ (AALL’s) State, Court & County Law Libraries Section. He also served on the Law Library Microform Consortium Executive Committee and on a number of AALL special projects and committees. He was also a former member of the Boston College Law School Alumni Council and recipient of its Daniel G. Holland Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 1999 he received the highest distinction bestowed by the American Association of Law Libraries, the Miriam Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award. In addition, in 1996, in Edgar Bellefontaine’s honor, the Law Librarians of New England created and awarded him the inaugural Edgar Award for Innovation, Excellence and Dedication to the Practice of Law Librarianship. Other awards and recognitions extended to him include the AALL-SCCLL’s Bethany J. Ochal Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession, West Publishing Company’s Excellence in Government Law Librarianship Award, the Henry C. Lind Award of the Association of the Reporters of Judicial Decisions, and the Chief Justice’s Award for Distinguished Service to the Judiciary.

Founded more than two centuries ago, the Social Law Library is a cornerstone of the Massachusetts legal community—the “level playing field” of legal research essential to the administration of justice. For thirty-seven years, Edgar J. Bellefontaine’s extraordinary leadership transformed and advanced the institution. The Social Law family mourns his passing and sends their condolences to Edgar’s family and many friends.

New England Law Student Information Literacy Standards

BREAKFAST MEETING!

Fellow Law Librarians,

We all work hard to ensure law students and new associates have the needed research skills to expertly face the tasks they are confronted with when beginning practice. Lexis and Westlaw have created certification programs that test students' proficiency in on-line research on their particular platforms. Could we do something similar for other research skills? What Information Literacy Standards do we think are important for law students? Betsy McKenzie and Susan Vaughn presented this idea at an ABLL meeting this fall. Whether you were able to attend or not, we are looking to keep the conversation moving.

We are hoping some of you can attend a breakfast meeting to discuss next steps.

Review of the top 10 areas that local law librarians see a need for improved research skills.
Can we use the AALL Draft Information Literacy Standards for Law Students as a building block for a certification program?

Web 2.0 Challenge 2009

Announcing the Web 2.0 Challenge 2009: A Free, Online Course to Introduce Law Librarians to Web 2.0 Technologies

Last year the AALL Computing Services Special Interest Section sponsored the first Web 2.0 Challenge, an online course to introduce law librarians to social software and how to use it in their libraries. The course was so popular CS-SIS is sponsoring it again in 2009.

The Web 2.0 Challenge will provide a free, comprehensive, and social online learning opportunity designed for law librarians that incorporates hands-on use of these technologies. The course is intended for law librarians who have little experience with these technologies but are interested in learning more.

The online course will take place between August 3 and September 6. The five week course will cover these areas:

Week 1: Blogs & RSS
Week 2: Flickr & Social Bookmarking Software
Week 3: Social Networking Software and Twitter
Week 4: Wikis and LibGuides
Week 5: Web 2.0 @ Your Library

Participants will be required to complete a series of weekly activities, including viewing an instructional screencast; completing hands-on exercises based on the lesson; weekly blogging about their experience; and participating in a weekly small group chat session. The course will culminate with each participant developing a proposal for implementing a specific social software tool in their library.

Full enrollment will be limited to approximately one hundred participants. However, course content will be freely viewable to anyone who wishes to follow along. Enrolled participants who complete all activities are eligible for final prize drawings (prizes provided by CS-SIS). Certificates will also be awarded to all participants who complete the course.

We anticipate opening enrollment June 22nd. There is no charge for this course and enrollment will be offered on a first come first served basis.

LLNE Spring 2009 Meeting Hosted by Quinnipiac University School of Law Library

Who should attend?
Academic, court, and firm librarians will benefit from learning about this emerging area of law. Today, there are 104 law schools in the US and Canada (including Quinnipiac, Harvard, UConn, Suffolk, Northeastern, and Boston University) that offer course selections in Animal Law. In a few short years, these law students will be advocating for your firms’ clients, prosecuting animal cruelty cases in your courthouses or teaching in your law schools about this new area of law.

What is it?
The Animal Legal Defense Fund describes animal law as a combination of statutory and case law in which the nature – legal, social or biological – of non-human animals is an important factor. Animal law encompasses companion animals, wildlife, animals used in entertainment, animals raised for food, and animals used in research. It permeates and affects torts, contracts, criminal law, trusts and estates, family law, and international law. This emerging legal specialty reflects the changes in attitudes that have evolved over the past thirty years towards our animals, food, and environment.

More about our program!
We’re going to start the day (after coffee of course!) with QUSL Professor Gail Stern’s "Biophilia and the Bookworm." Biophilia is the instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems as defined by Pulitzer Prize winner naturalist Edward O. Wilson. Professor Stern will discuss how the body of laws we have today evolved.

Following Professor Stern’s presentation, a panel will be about bioethics and the use of laboratory animals. Featured on this panel will be Dr. Herbert J. Van Kruiningen from the University of Connecticut, Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science, and QUSL Professor John Thomas. Professor Thomas, QUSLs Health Law expert, will take a pro animal tack. While we can’t guarantee it, JT as he’s locally known, is a talented and erudite guitarist and may be persuaded to add a musical note to our day.

After our vegetarian lunch, we’ll have a panel on Connecticut law. Mr. Kerry Patton, a Quinnipiac law student, authored "Justice of Animals, the State of the Law in Connecticut" in the October 2008 issue of the Connecticut Lawyer. In his article Kerry discusses the link between violence against animals and violence against humans; in particular, the role animal abuse plays in domestic violence cases. Kerry will discuss the topics in his article for our panel and talk about ongoing legislative efforts to deal with this issue.

QUSL Professor David Rosettenstein will also participate on this panel. Professor Rosettenstein, a long time advocate for animals, will bring his passion and dedication to us in his discussion of the controversial leg hold traps.

Our third speaker on this panel will be attorney Eric Annes from the Connecticut Fund for the Environment. Attorney Annes will discuss open space initiatives and their impact on wildlife.
Our last speaker of the day will be QUSL Professor Linda Meyer who has both her law degree and a doctorate in philosophy from University of California Berkeley. Professor Meyer will bring a sensitive and intellectual approach to the issues involving factory farms and our food supply system.

How are employers handling the personal information of their employees? All of these questions have important legal dimensions. Many of these questions are only now beginning to be addressed through regulation and litigation. This program will address how employers and the legal community contend with the dynamic environment created by technological change.

Greetings LLNE Members! Here are few AALL updates from the conference....

The vendor floor was very busy and I checked out the LLNE table and it looked great (thanks Diane for creation and Kathy and Christine for setting it up!)

SNELLA/LLNE had a lunch where Kathy Fletcher passed over the reigns to Chris Knott as new President of LLNE (see below). He received the ceremonial duck and a brand new crown. Michale Hughes announced the new candidates for the Executive Board and they were all approved.

In social news, the NELLCO recpetion was great. It was at the Uptown Billards Club in NW Portland. Tracy made an announcement about the Federated Search and schools were continuing to sign up. The club featured pool tables, dart boards, and ping pong. Everyone had a good time. The funny thing was that the lounge had pictures of books all along the walls. (See pic below - Karen Quin and Raquel Ortiz and the book background) Many commented it felt like home!

And, going that “one step beyond” where many librarians have great trepidation about going, allowing the personnel of that office to circulate the materials themselves. Two featured speakers from the frontlines of the project, Suffolk Systems Services Librarian (and incoming Chair of the Innovative Law Users Group (ILUG)), Sarah Boling, will speak on the technical services aspects of the project, while Circulation Services Librarian Sabrina Holley-Williams will provide the public services perspective, followed by a Q & A and Discussion period as time allows.

Trial Court LoisLaw Remote Access Ending

The Massachusetts Trial Court Libraries announced that, as of July 1st, they can no longer offer remote access to LoisLaw to trial court members. Wolters Kluwer has declined to renew the remote access agreement. There is a brief survey up at the trial court website. If you, or someone in your firm, used this service, fill it out. The trial courts are going to be using the responses to help them decide on a replacement service.

If so, the LLNE Public Relations Committee wants to hear from you. In an effort to publicize member accomplishments & encourage new scholarship, the committee has compiled a bibliography of LLNE member publications and presentations. The bib will be posted to the LLNE website and featured at the events table at the AALL meeting in New Orleans. We’ll be adding new entries to the 2006 bibliography. If your works were included in earlier editions, you only need to send new work that was published or presented since July 2006. If you don’t have anything to submit this time around, fear not - the bibliography will be updated annually. The submission deadline is Friday, June 15, 2007. Web 2.0: Insights and Implications for Law Libraries

Greg Tananbaum is a consultant and entrepreneur focusing on activities at the intersection of technology, content, and academia. He has served as the President of The Berkeley Electronic Press, as well as Director of Product Marketing for EndNote. Greg writes a regular column in Against the Grain covering emerging developments in the field of scholarly communication. He has served as an invited speaker at dozens of conferences, including the American Library Association, the Society for Scholarly Publishing, the Association of Professional and Learned Society Publishers, and Online Information UK. He holds a Master's Degree from the London School of Economics and a B.A. from Yale University.

Greg will help workshop participants unpack the Web 2.0 landscape. The presentation will examine where we are in the current scholarly communication landscape, how to best define Web 2.0 within the context of that landscape, how hot button issues like institutional repositories and open access fit into the mix, the limits of Web 2.0 within scholarly communication, the changing role of the library as the Web 2.0 wave crests, some considerations for the library as it is asked to deal with Web 2.0, and what the future (Web 3.0) might hold. Perkins Coie LLP, Seattle, Washington, seeks a summer library intern. The internship is a summer program designed to introduce candidates from diverse backgrounds to the challenging and rewarding profession of law firm librarianship. The library intern will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the variety of functions in a large law firm library. The intern will receive training in technical services, have designated reference desk hours, attend staff planning meetings, network with law librarians from other institutions and be involved in special projects such as web page development and library-sponsored training.

Benefits to the intern include the opportunity to work with a team of experienced law librarians in a top AmLaw 100 law firm; introduction to all aspects of special librarianship including serials management, cataloging, circulation, interlibrary loan; development of reference skills and expansion of knowledge of legal resources and databases. Beyond their assigned duties, the intern will be expected to design and carry out a research, instructional or service-based project and to create a research guide or article that may be used on the law firm's intranet.

We are seeking applicants who are currently enrolled and satisfactorily performing in an ALA accredited school of library and information science. Class work in legal bibliography is preferred but not required. Candidates must possess excellent communications skills and experience with Microsoft Word/Excel. We are seeking applicants with diverse cultural and life experiences. The library internship will run for 6 weeks, beginning in late June or early July, and is a full-time, paid position.

AALL has published a STATE-BY- STATE REPORT ON AUTHENTICATION OF ONLINE LEGAL RESOURCES. This report found that

A significant number of the state online legal resources are official but none are authenticated or afford ready authentication by standard methods. State online primary legal resources are therefore not sufficiently trustworthy. Citizens and law researchers may reasonably doubt their authority and should approach such resources critically.

Find Research Guides Online

Cornell announced today its new Legal Research Engine available at http://library.lawschool.cornell.edu/guides/researchengine.asp"
This specialized search engine helps users easily find authoritative online legal research guides on every subject. It searches approximately 20 different web sites that either prolifically publish guides, or index and link to guides. The number of web sites searched was deliberately kept small to keep search results manageable and focused. You can also add it to your Google home page. "

This is a nice resource but because it searches whole web pages a lot of extraneous results pop up when you run a search. For example a search on "right to die" does return a couple research guides on point but you also get some less useful items like an LLRX article about web searching.

LLNE will award one or two scholarships of $750 to help with the expenses of attending AALL in St. Louis this summer. Okay, where have I been? A friend just turned me on to myspace.com. MySpace is online social networking to the nth degree. It includes a profile page, email, instant messaging, calendar, blogging, and file sharing technology. The only problem is, if Business Week is to be trusted, I don't quite fit the demographics of the MySpace Generation. It is worth looking at though just to get an idea of what younger students and patrons are getting hooked on in terms of functionality and interaction.

The “Coats for Kids” Coat Drive benefits the children at The Home for Little Wanderers, "one of the oldest welfare agencies in the nation and the largest in New England." The goal of this volunteer effort, organized by Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Cares, a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization operated by Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, is to collect 750 new coats for the children of The Home. Additional sponsors of the drive include Blanchard Press, Inc., Road Warrior Moving and Storage, and Rugged Bear.

LLNE members are invited to participate in this event, either individually or as a group. Volunteers may personally drop off their new coat donations at one of the participating Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage or Rugged Bear store locations on or before December 15, 2005. Tax-deductible donations, made payable by check to Coldwell Banker Cares, can be mailed directly to Coldwell Banker Residential Mortgage, Attn: Coats for Kids Drive, 277 Dartmouth Street, Boston, MA 02116. The General Court has created MassBalance, "... a budget simulation game designed to let a player make budgeting choices similar to the choices legislators are making. In the game, as in the state legislature, some programs cannot be cut, others may be cut but the consequences are potentially severe and the importance of some programs only becomes clear once you have learned a little about them. Northeastern University School of Law Library is looking for a Reference/Electronic Services Librarian.

Job responsibilities include: Develop, teach, and oversee the Law Library's computer resource training programs including instruction in using computer assisted legal research databases, web based licensed databases and other web technology used by the law school community. Provide reference, research and other bibliographic services, including expert on-line assistance to law school community. Teach students, individually and as a team, legal research techniques and strategies for use with print and online tools. Prepare bibliographies, research guides and other library publications tailored to the research needs of the law school community. Serves as the law library web master and works with other library staff members to maintain the library web pages. Recruits, trains, and supervises student representatives who assist with the library computer resource training program. Maintains the library’s electronic database access via the online catalog, NuCat, using Innovative Interfaces tools. Works with the University Libraries regarding use and maintenance of the electronic resource management system and the online catalog, NuCat. Participates in library collection development and assist the Head of Reader Services to develop department policy, compile statistics, and submit activity reports.
Master's degree in Library and/or Information Science from an A.L.A. accredited graduate school and a J.D. from an A.B.A. accredited law school required. Would consider a candidate with either a J.D. or an MLS, or equivalent, who has significantly completed the graduation requirements for the second graduate degree.

Would prefer a minimum three to five years' reference librarian experience to include developed expertise in computer-assisted legal information systems, Internet, and web technologies preferred. Demonstrated ability and experience in user training (individual and group instruction) and consulting. Excellent problem solving and communication (oral and written) skills; good interpersonal skills needed. The successful candidate should have high level of motivation, initiative and responsibility. Willingness to work a flexible schedule which may include some evening and weekend hours.
